BNSF 1047 Near Mountainair, NM - 7/98

  • Canon A1, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • A "Pumpkin" C44-9W rolls a merchandise train westward down the upper reaches of Abo Canyon on a very hot July day.
BNSF 1074 In Abo Canyon, NM - 7/98

  • Canon A1, 35-105 f3.5, Kodak E200
  • BNSF 1074 continues down the double track in the upper half of Abo Canyon. Temperature at the time was an estimated 100 degrees.
Santa Fe 551 At Sais, NM - 7/98

  • Canon A1, 300mm f4, Kodak E200
  • A Santa Fe GE leads a westbound out of Abo Canyon at Sais. In the low flatlands the temperatue was hitting close to 105 degrees. Needless to say, I spent most of the time between trains in my truck with the A/C running full blast!
Santa Fe 937 Near Grants, NM - 7/98

  • A Santa Fe C44 hustles a hot piggyback train west out of Grants. A few minutes before I had driven through Grants and a local bank thermometer indicate 105 degrees. Now that's hot for almost 7,000 ft elevation!

  • The setting sun casts a warm glow on ATSF 600 as it climbs westbound toward the Continental Divide.

Santa Fe 8736 Near Williams Jct, NM - 7/98

  • SF 8736 leads a doublestack train just east of Williams Junction. This photo was take a couple of days after the previous photos, and in the high country between Williams and Flagstaff the temps were much, much nicer.

  • With San Fransciso Peaks looming in the background, a Warbonnet GP60M leads a westbound doublestack near Williams Junction.

  • A Warbonnet B40-8W is on the point of a westbound piggyback train near Williams Junction.
BN 7920 Near Williams Junction, AZ - 7/98

  • Canon A1, 300mm f4/2x teleconvertor, Kodachrome 64
  • BN 7920, an SD40-2, leads a stack train near Williams Junction. A LOT of BN green can be seen on the old ATSF mainline these days.

  • A C44-9W leads a very hot piggyback train westbound toward Williams.
Santa Fe 6472 Near Double A, AZ - 7/98

  • Canon A1, 50mm f1.4, Kodak E200
  • A westbound stack train with Santa Fe Bluebonnet 6472 on the point traverses the cuts and fills near Double A. Double A is about 20 miles west of Williams on the Willaims to Ash Fork realignment.

  • A Santa Fe GP60M blasts through Double A on it's westward trek.

  • I'm on my way back home to Colorado, and here's ATSF 5825 pulling a stack train near Bluewater.

  • A Santa Fe C40-8W leads a westbound through Rio Puerco.

  • Just east of Wagon Mound, SF 536 leads an empty stack train through the semaphores.
