Semaphores On The Santa Fe/BNSF Raton Subdivision

(Click on the thumbnail for a larger image)

Sunset At Minderman, CO - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 300mm f4, Kodak E200
  • Thursday, Sept 3 I arrive just in time to catch this beautiful sunset behind the blades at the west end of the Minderman siding.
Santa Fe 667 West Of Minderman, CO - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • Early the next morning I catch a Santa Fe 'Z' train led by a C44 at the first set of semaphores west of Minderman. The milepost is near 585.
Santa Fe 667 At Model, CO - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • I race 667 south at 70mph until the passing track at Model. I had about 15 seconds to jump out of my truck and shoot this photo as the big GE and train roared by the west end blade. I love the Santa Fe, but their trains go too damn fast!
Santa Fe 667 near Gallinas, CO - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • After a quick stop in Trinidad for a shot, I paced 667 and her train up Raton Pass. Train speed up the pass was about 15 mph, so I had a chance to catch my breath.
Santa Fe 667 West of Springer, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • 667's slow pace down Raton Pass plus a crew change in Raton gave me a chance to get ahead of the train again and set up at the northern most set of semaphores in New Mexico. This set of blades is located about 5 miles west of Springer. Here 667 and train flies by at 70+ miles per hour.
Amtrak 3 The Southwest Chief At Levy, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • A couple of hours after 667 gets away, Amtrak 3 blasts by the west end of siding at Levy, NM
Santa Fe 8288 Near Wagon Mound, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 300mm f4, Kodak E200
  • With the "Wagon Mound" towering in the background, Santa Fe 8288 pulling another 'Z' train passes the first set of semaphores west of town.
Santa Fe 8288 At Watrous, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90,80-200 f4L Kodak E200
  • Racing south from Wagon Mound, I managed to get ahead of 8288 by 5 minutes to catch this shot at the east end of the Watrous siding.
Amtrak 4 The Southwest Chief Between Wagon Mound and Springer, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • All was quiet on the Raton Sub the rest of the afternoon until Amtrak 4 showed up around 6:00 PM. The three F40PH's fly by the a set of semaphores about half way between Springer and Wagon Mound.
Santa Fe 5155 West Of Springer, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 50mm f1.4 Kodak E200
  • About 20 minutes after sunset this westbound merchandise freight led by SD40-2 5155 splits the blades at the same location as the last Amtrak shot.
Santa Fe Grain Train West Of Springer, NM - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 50mm f1.4, Kodak E200
  • My "art" shot of the year! It's around 10:30 PM, it's pitch black dark, and this 70mph grain train roars by the same blades as the previous two shots. I created this shot by pointing the camera in the same direction the train was moving, then opening the shutter from 1 second before the locos came into view until the locos were out of the camera view. Total time of the exposure was about 8 seconds.
Amtrak 3 The Southwest Chief Near Minderman, CO - 9/98
  • Canon T90, 80-200 f4L, Kodak E200
  • The third day of the trip I wandered back up to the Colorado end of the line. My only catch of the morning was Amtrak 4 at the blades just east of the Minderman siding. Temps at the time were approaching 100 degrees so I decided to call it quits and head home!
