Crawford Hill - Page 1 of 5Crawford Hill stretches from the town of Crawford on the north side to east of
the little hamlet of Marsland on the south side. Heavy eastbound trains struggle
up the almost 1.8% ruling grade to the summit at Belmont. Most eastbounds require
helpers on the rear to push. Heavy train traffic, with both coal trains and
freights, along with steep grades and beautiful pine covered mountains make
Crawford Hill one of the premire railfanning spots in the world!
This gallery starts off with a small sample of "older" photographs taken in the early 1980s. This was during the time when Burlingtion Northern was undertaking a massive rebuilding project of Crawford Hill, including the installation of double track all the way over the hill, and the digging of the massive man-made canyon at Belmont to bypass the Belmont tunnel. Include here are 3 "somewhat rare" photos of trains still using the only railroad tunnel in the state of Nebraska. The other 4 galleries contain images captured over the last 5 years or so.
